Welcome to the PBSC City Series, our original content covering different cities around the world that partner with us for their shared micromobility needs. Join us as we deep dive into how our technology and innovation has empowered the success of their bike-sharing systems.

Celebrating its sixth anniversary, PBSC’s sustainable bike-share solution in Guadalajara, Mexico has become part of the pulse of this vibrant, forward-thinking city. Operated by BKT bici pública, the successful system — called MiBici — confirms the passion and openness of Guadalajara’s locals towards this healthy, efficient and eco-friendly form of micromobility, as well as PBSC’s excitement about creating and customizing urban bike-sharing solutions for each city’s unique needs and infrastructure. A true urban mobility city, Guadalajara recently built more than 113 kilometers of new bike lanes!

Resonating with culture, this modern capital of the State of Jalisco is known for its international tech industries and stands out as a global research and development centre of new technologies. (It’s also full of history and is where tequila and mariachi were born.)

Guadalajara holds the distinction of being Mexico’s second-biggest city, and tenth-largest in all of Latin America; about 5 million locals reside within its metropolitan area. In fact, Guadalajara’s forward-looking population was a perfect fit for the State of Jalisco to ask PBSC to put in place a bike-sharing system that would bring citizens a sustainable, innovative alternative to urban mobility, in harmony with the city’s existing mobility plan.

In December 2014, MiBici’s launch introduced to Guadalajara’s downtown area a fleet of 1276 robust, comfy ICONIC bikes and 122 Smart Stations. Five years later, with 2925 ICONIC bikes in circulation, the system has grown to operate in three municipalities of this thriving Mexican metropolis: Guadalajara, Zapopan and Tlaquepaque.

MiBici also consists of 280 Smart Stations, strategically placed in different areas of the city to improve the fluidity and flow of commuters. These multipurpose, solar-powered Smart Stations are theft-proof, securing bikes and protecting them from vandalism. BKT bici pública benefits from real-time information transmitted by the Smart Stations to manage the system and monitor usage trends. …

Start us off with your career journey, how did you find yourself in the world of bikeshare?

GC: I joined the company in 2009, over 11 years ago. My main mandate was to grow the business internationally. At the time, our system was only in Montreal, but I really saw the potential for sales abroad.

Before entering the world of bikeshare, I was in manufacturing and the company I worked for was the company hired by BIXI to do the first prototypes of the system. I worked on the electronics there, as the director of business development. When there was an opening for international development at BIXI, I decided it would be a great opportunity, applied, and was chosen for the role. Part of BIXI eventually became PBSC when the company restructured, and the rest is history. …

Montreal is Canada’s second-largest city, and the largest Francophone metropolis in the Americas. With its diverse heritage, Montreal has flourished as a recognized center for artists and creative industries, but also as a leader for sustainable mobility and intelligent transportation.

During the summer of 2020, the city crossed an important milestone in terms of micromobility. A pioneer in the world of bike sharing, Montreal became one of the first cities in North America to launch a large-scale e-bike fleet, when it partnered with PBSC to launch 1,000 E-FIT bikes. …

Britain’s capital is home to 9 million people. It is a bustling, vibrant, and fast-growing city. This smart city has a long history of innovation and ambitious investment in its transit system. London’s Tube, dating back to 1863, was the first of its kind and today 37% of trips made in the city are on public transit. Novel initiatives like the congestion charge are aimed to reduce the heavy traffic flow in the city’s streets and noise pollution.

With many commuters using private vehicles, London was and remains one of the most congested cities in the world. In fact, the average car trip is only 2 miles long, but happens at the low speed of 6 mph. This overcrowding challenge, which has only become more pronounced in recent years, made London a perfect candidate for a widely available and reliable bike share system. City officials jumped on the opportunity and launched one in 2010. Mayor of London at the time, Boris Johnson, rolled out the program, which was later dubbed the Boris Bikes in his honor. …

Cities will now be able to securely dock and charge various types of e-scooters in the same PBSC smart-stations that accommodate our bikes and e-bikes

Since its inception over 10 years ago, the PBSC smart-station has come a long way. From the original energy self-sufficient solar station that started the movement, to the e-station, hooked up to the city’s power grid and able to recharge PBSC’s e-bikes. Today, we announce the next and biggest innovation in our smart-stations yet: our multimodal solution.

PBSC has invested millions in research and development to not only use cutting edge technology, but also create a solution that is highly customizable. Our over 7,000 smart-stations around the world adhere to the highest quality standards and together provide 150,000 smart docks across 4 continents. We’re also aware that micromobility goes beyond bike-sharing, and that cities need a comprehensive, compatible solution to successfully integrate different types of micromobility vehicles. …

In the face of the COVID-19 health crisis, the bike is emerging as a top transportation choice around the world. Cities are transforming to accommodate more cyclists on the road and we think bike-share is set to surge.

As cities around the world start to ease lockdown restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, governments from New Zealand are rushing to erect dedicated bike lanes and walkways so that residents may practice physical distancing while commuting and exercising. In Paris, 650-km of emergency bike lanes will traverse the city and the French government is providing individual citizens with €50 to get their old bikes fixed in an effort to promote active travel. The initiative is part of a €20-million investment to cover bicycle repairs and increase bike storage post quarantine. …

Barcelona’s BICING bike-share system uses PBSC’s e-charging infrastructure and a mix of bikes and e-bikes.

Powering shared e-bike and e-scooter networks shouldn’t be hard for users, operators or cities. Re-introducing the station, the simple solution to the charging problem.

In the past 18 months, we’ve seen demand for electric bike-share skyrocket. From Monaco and Dubai, which opted for 100 per cent electric, to the mixed fleets in Barcelona and Valence, e-bikes have been part of every deliverable in our recent history.

Ten years ago PBSC Urban Solutions changed the landscape of urban mobility forever. The revolution began quietly at first, with just one city, but not long after a second joined in, followed by a third, and now more than 27 others. A revolution that started in the streets of Montreal is now global, with cities across the world riding with us. From Rio de Janeiro to London, Guadalajara to Chicago, we’re crossing borders and hopping continents. What can we say, we love to start a trend.

A DECADE ON AND GOING STRONG
